Safe Routes to School Project Updates

The City of Monticello and Monticello School District were awarded a MN Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Safe Routes to School 2022 Infrastructure Grant.

The grant funding was used for safety improvements near Pinewood Elementary School and along School Boulevard. Now that it’s time to head back to school, we’d like to highlight some of the changes you might see in the area.SRTS Project Back to School

  • The trail along the south side of School Boulevard was extended from Cardinal Hills to Fenning Avenue.
  • Enhanced pedestrian crossings with refuge islands have been installed at the Cardinal Hills Park crossing, Pelican Lane, and the Meadow Oak Ave and Fenning Roundabout. New RRFB’s (Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacons) will be installed at these locations later this fall.
  • There are changes to one of high school entrances with a new right-out only and a refuge island for pedestrians.
  • The sidewalk at Eastview was widened to assist with drop-off and pick-up times.
  • Radar feedback speed signs and additional lighting will also be installed on School Boulevard in the coming months.
  • Sidewalk has been installed along the east side of Elm Street between 6th Street and Broadway, along 6th Street from Elm to Vine, and along 4th Street from Elm to Minnesota.
  • A section of Elm Street sidewalk near the railroad tracks will be installed once the railroad crossing is extended for the new sidewalk.
  • Trees and sod are anticipated to be placed in September (the next week or two) and the RRFB at the intersection of Elm and 3rd street will be installed later this fall.
